BASEMENT TAPES DAY MONTREAL 2023
October 28, 2023 from 14:00-18:00
At the Musée des ondes Emile Berliner, 1001 Rue Lenoir, Montréal, QC H4C 2Z6
Free entry

ARCMTL and the Musée des ondes Emile Berliner are joining forces again for the second annual Montreal edition of Basement Tapes Day (Journée des trouvailles sonores). This year, the event takes place in the brand-new exhibit hall of the Museum! No reservation is required.

Audio archivists and experts from both partner institutions will demonstrate how to listen to and digitize recordings in old or obsolete formats. From reel-to-reel tapes, wax cylinders, acetate discs and cassette tapes, don’t miss the chance to learn about these formats and listen to the sonic wonders they hold.

If you or your family have old audio recordings that you’re unable to play anymore, you may contact the team in advance to let us know what you have, so we can talk about that format and maybe even digitize some of it at the event!

The Musée des Ondes Berliner is a four minute walk from Place-Saint-Henri métro station.

Home Movie Playlist

ARCMTL is now regularly adding digitized home movies found in Montreal on a Youtube playlist for ephemeral films here. If you have any old film reels, VHS or beta or other video formats that you think may have Montreal-area or Quebec home movies on them and you don’t know how to transfer them or want to donate them, you can contact us by email.

ARCMTL and the Musée des ondes Emile Berliner joined forces in November 2020 for the first-ever web-streamed Montreal edition of Basement Tapes Day, a showcase of found sounds and vintage audio formats! View the event on its Youtube playlist here, with subtitles available in English or French.

Home Movie Day Montreal is organized by Arcmtl and its partners: the Center for Home Movies, Triana Media the Cinémathèque québécoise, Les Productions de la Ruelle Vidéomédia  and the Groupe de recherche sur le cinéma éducatif, industriel et de commande canadien.
